The U. S. Food and Drug Administration will issue an advisory about Levitra’s use in the country to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
This article originally appeared on the November 8, 2015,HealthDay, inThe Wall Street Journal.
Levitra, known generically as vardenafil, treats erectile dysfunction (ED). The drug has been used in the U. since at least 2003.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a voluntary advisory to help consumers and doctors determine whether the drug is safe and appropriate for their patients. The advisory was issued on November 8, 2015, by the FDA’s Office of Safety and Effectiveness. The agency said that it was unable to determine whether Levitra is safe for patients.
Levitra was first approved in 2003 by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men. In 2007, the drug was approved for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition that makes the prostate hard and grow. It was first approved for use in patients ages 18 and older. In 2010, the FDA announced that it would require more information about the drug’s safety and efficacy than it did in the past.
Levitra is the only medication approved to treat ED in the United States and is now available as a generic drug. The FDA does not currently approve the use of vardenafil as a treatment for ED.
In a statement, the agency said it was “confident that Levitra is not a treatment for ED, based on its safety and efficacy data.”
Levitra is available in 10 mg, 40 mg and 100 mg doses.
